What is an Artist’s Proof?

Limited edition archival digital fine art prints, formerly referred to as “Giclees” are produced with the continuous ink jet technology of a digital printer. Four million tiny droplets per second by four calibrated color streams of archival ink are deposited on absorbent paper, canvas, paper or other material favored by the artist.

The expert printmaker and artist oversee every detail of the reproduction process. The result is a magnificent display of color with the precise hue, value and intensity of the original. Limited Edition Archival Digital Prints have been shown in exhibitions and purchased for permanent collections in museums through out the united States and abroad.

A small group of prints set aside from an edition for an artist’s or printer’s use. Typically some of the first prints pulled from a limited edition of prints are marked as an A.P. and [sometimes] left unnumbered. Artist’s proofs generally draw a higher price than other impressions.

Is an artist proofs more valuable than a limited edition?

Because the number of APs is smaller and because the APs are “closer to the artist’s hand,” signed APs tend to be more valuable than the prints of a signed and numbered limited edition. EA. An épreuve d’artist or artist’s proof.
